The goal is to take a small, traditionally built home in Kigali and make it into a professional art gallery… Yes. We have a lot of work to do.
But we’ve gotten a good start! In June, Tongo received funds from a successful Kickstarter campaign for additional renovations and touch-ups. Now we’re push-pull-painting our way to a new look for the gallery. It will be great for the art display, but also for the activities like classes for kids and adults (big kids) that we wish to host in the space.
So, this blog is where we’ll tell our story - The journey of a little gallery that grew from nothing (think: run down residential mud-brick house) and aspires to become our creative dream-space (Tongo Art Gallery!). Because after all, an art gallery in Africa is a cool, exciting thing and we want to share everything about our experience.
Over the next few days and weeks it will be all renovations – all the time. Then we’ll shift into sharing more about the art and the lives of the artists behind this creative hideaway in the heart of Kigali.
And I suppose I might do well to introduce myself (sorry about that): I’m Sarah, designer and co-owner of Tongo Art Gallery and I’ll be your blog hostess for the foreseeable future. I’ve been in Kigali several years doing this and that. Now I’m happy to be in the midst of this artistic venture with my partner Joe Mukuna, painter and fellow gallery co-owner.
Alright, enough of the formalities. We’ve got work to do. But check back in with us to see the transformation! Now, time to get our hands dirty…
